Here is an interesting example of ingenuity:

On the way back from Kabini, there were a number of places we passed where farmers had dumped loads of whole grain on the road.  As cars and trucks passed, they would run over the grain, effectively threshing it (removing the indedible chaff from the edible grain).  After some time, the farmers would then sweep up the "processed" grain from the road.
